Interactive Animator & Motion Designer

Designing character animation systems for Growtrics,

an AI tutor for Primary to JC students, in Rive — from

idle states and speech-synced mouth movement to

swappable outfits and in-game interactions.

Background

Growtrics is an AI tutoring platform for Primary to Junior College students, delivering personalised Math and Science practice at scale. For students — especially younger ones — a tool built around exam questions and progress tracking can easily feel cold or overly academic.

Since December 2025, I've worked full-time at Growtrics as an Interactive Animator, building a modular character system in Rive that brings the brand's mascot, a rabbit named Gracie, to life across the product — bringing a friendly, responsive face to an otherwise academic experience.

The work spans idle behaviors and expressions that keep the character feeling alive between interactions, speech-synced mouth animation (viseme system) for spoken explanations, swappable outfits and accessories for personalization, and playful in-game moments like quiz reward animations. Rather than static illustration, the goal was a character that reacts to user input, syncs to audio, and adapts across different contexts within the product — customization screens, learning modules, and game interactions alike — making the learning experience feel more human and motivating for students.

Deliverables

Built and maintained a full Rive-based animation system — including idle and expression states, state machines, indexed inputs for customization, viseme-based lip-sync, and interactive in-game reward sequences — integrated across the product's learning and customization experiences.

Interactive Mini-Games

Core learning materials turned into quest-style mini-games,

each driven by its own state machine logic to keep learners engaged.

Mini-Game 1: Pop Quiz

Answer multiple-choice questions correctly to win the tug-of-war and pull Gracie the Rabbit across the finish line.

→ Rive logic: A Number input validates the selected answer via Trigger, driving the rope's tug-of-war position and the progress bar fill.

Mini-Game 2: Jumbled Steps

Drag the scrambled steps into the correct order to help Gracie cross the bridge —

get it wrong and she falls to the crocodiles waiting below.

→ Rive logic: Listeners set each step's slot via Number inputs; a State Machine validates the sequence and

Triggers the bridge-cross animation on success or the bridge-break/croc-splash animation on error.

LOSE State

Mini-Game 3: Flashcard

Reveal the answer to each flashcard and rise higher in the hot air balloon with every correct one.

→ Rive logic: A Boolean input swaps the art board between question and answer view; correct/incorrect

Triggers drive the balloon's Number input — climbing higher on correct, deflating and dropping in flames on incorrect.

CORRECT State

INCORRECT State

Mini-Game 4: Crossword Puzzle

Fill in the grid to complete the magic potion — get every word right and it brews perfectly.

→ Rive logic: Text Run inputs capture letter entry per cell; a State Machine checks them against the

answer key and Triggers the potion-brewing success animation or a mixed-up potion explosion on error.
